Oskar Schindler was born in 1908 in Czechoslovakia. When he became unemployed during the Great Depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s, he joined the Nazis. He collected intelligence on Poles. He bribed his way to owning an enamel goods company, previously owned by Jews. Given its location in a Jewish neighborhood, he originally hired Jews because they were cheap. Over time, he became increasingly attached to his workers.
When workers were moved into their own camp, he smuggled food and supplies. He also used his own financial resources to bribe officials who caught him. He was arrested twice, but he was released on account of his connections. When the camp moved, he made a list of all his workers. When the move was complete, he had a small medical office in the camp to take care of the sick. Those who died were given a Jewish funeral, paid by Schindler. However, 1,200 Jews ended up surviving.
